My Teenage Fantasy Came to Life at NY Comic Con

nycc-logo-hi-resThis weekend I attended NY Comic Con at the Javits Center in NYC. For the low down on my experience you can check out my Buzzfeed article here.  Not only did I witness epic cosplay and see old friends but I also got to meet one of my teen heartthrobs–C. Thomas Howell.

It took every ounce of self-control NOT to say, “Stay gold, Pony Boy!” Seriously.  I wanted to but how many times do you supposed people have shouted that at him? I’m betting more than he could count. Tommy was charming, friendly, and accompanied by his teenage son, Liam. When I told Liam he looked like his dad, he said, “Nah, I get all my good looks from my mom.” Well, played, Liam. Well, played.

I wanted to ask him a question that perhaps he hadn’t been asked before. My earth-shattering inquiry was, “What was one of your favorite moments when you filmed The Hitcher?”

Random, right? Maybe but that movie scared the crap out of me. Rutger Hauer delivered a creepy ass performance in that flick and the scene when the girl gets torn apart by the trucks gave me nightmares for weeks.

Tommy’s answer was interesting and he said that he didn’t think he’d told anyone this before–so you’re hearing it here first, kids.

Apparently, when they were filming the scene when his character is contemplating suicide (see pic above), he drops the gun and reconsiders. Right at that moment, the clouds parted and the sun shone through, almost like a divine nudge in the right direction. Luckily, the director had a camera trained on the sky and captured the heavenly moment and it ended up in the film.

The oddest part of meeting him was that it felt like I already knew him. Weird, right? I guess it can be like that with celebrities, especially those that were part of our adolescent years.

I wonder who I’ll meet next year?
