Yesterday was the first day of the RT Convention here in Chicago. I had to get my butt out of bed at 3:30 a.m. to make my 6:00 a.m. flight but it was worth it. Lucky for me, I have a wonderful husband who also got up at that horrid hour to drive to me to the airport. The convention is being held at the Hyatt Regency O”Hare and it’s a beautiful facility.
The day started early and just kept on going. I’m glad my flight got in so early because it gave me time to unpack and get the lay of the land before the workshop I was running.
I have to be honest…I was worried that people wouldn’t show up at my public speaking workshop. Y’know, it’s that fear that you’ll throw a party and nobody will come. Luckily that didn’t happen and I had a great group. Two of my fellow Sourcebooks authors came and partcipated in the exercises which was awesome! (Thank you Cheryl Brooks and Ashlyn Chase!) The rest of the day was filled with networking and a nap before dinner.
The most fascinating part about having this four day party at this convention center is that we’re not the only group here…although we are the loudest and most colorful. I was having dinner at the bar last night and had chance to chat with a few of the guys who are here for a Carrier Convention–they ship stuff all over the world. These poor fellas felt like they’d been dropped in the middle of another planet at first! Last night was the 20’s themed flapper party, so many of the RT attendees were dressed for the occasion and looked great! However, if you’re a business man here for your sales convention….it’s a befuddling sight. I was more than happy to educate them about our group and to my delight I saw several of the shipping guys crash the Ellora’s Cave Step Up & Stomp dance party later that evening. I didn’t do any dancing because I was just too damn tired by that point but I did get a chance to chat with readers and fellow authors.
I kicked off this morning with a workout to get the blood flowing because I’m very excited about today’s events! Sourcebooks is located just outside of Chicago and they’re taking all of their authors over to the offices for a grand tour. I’ll be sure take lots of pictures on that outing and more tonight at the Scottish Fling–there are sure to be some great costumes at that one.
