Are you a romance reader? Do you love sitting for hours getting swept away in the latest paranormal or sexy contemporary? ME too! But you know what I don’t love? Getting out of shape. That kind of sucks. A lot. But it’s not an unusual story. The more sedentary we are, the softer our bodies become. About a year ago, I finally decided to take control of my health….here is my story.
I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember and food has controlled me in one way or another. I weighed my heaviest in high school and clocked in at around 230 pounds but my senior year I got active and lost a lot of it. I was able to maintain my weight around 160 after the birth of my first two children. However, after my twins arrived (boys #3 and #4) my weight never got below 175. I thought that was where my body was “meant” to be and try as I might I couldn’t get below that. More often than not, I was above it.
In 2012, I reached a personal and professional milestone and quit my day job to write full-time. It’s been a dream come true to do what I love for a living but as with most things there is a downside. Sitting at a computer 6-8 hours a day 5 or more days a week is not good for the waistline.
While attending a reader convention in Florida in February 2014, I saw pictures of myself that people were posting and I could no longer deny it. I’d let my weight get out of control again. It wasn’t the lighting or the angle…I’d gotten heavy again and I felt awful. While in my hotel room crying about the state I’d gotten myself into…I realized that I needed to make a change.
I used Nutrisystem to help me get my eating under control but it was the T25 workouts that totally changed my body! I told myself that I could commit to 25 minutes a day…and I did! I mean come on…we’ve all got 25 minutes. Right?
I set a goal of losing 30 pounds and that would get me back to my pre-baby/wedding weight. To be honest, I really didn’t think I would be able to do it. I thought, well…I’m 44…I’ve had 4 boys…this may just be where I’m supposed to be.
NOPE! I actually surpassed my 30 pound weight loss goal and thanks to my 6 day a week workout schedule I wear a smaller size now than I did 20 years ago.
I reached my goal in June and went from a tight size 12 to a size 6/8!
Better yet…I’ve maintained it 🙂
I feel incredible!!! My energy is great. My blood pressure, which had gotten high, is back in the healthy range. My skin looks better. I look and feel younger. For the first time in 40+ years I wore a bikini at the pool and beach. I never thought that would happen. Ever.
THAT is a huge personal milestone and I still can’t quite believe I did it.
Food is no longer for numbing pain or feeding stress. It is for fueling my body and that’s it.
I have control. Not the food.
Take it from this 45 year old mother of 4 boys….It’s never too late to take control and get the healthy life that you want!
Like a lot of romance writers, I have a large social media platform and I was sharing my T25 fitness journey along the way. The response has been overwhelming. It turns out a lot of romance readers and writers are in the same boat and it’s not that surprising.
Reading is a sedentary hobby and writing is a sedentary career, so it isn’t a huge shock that weight related challenges are prevalent in our industry.
It got me thinking…. Why not start a fitness group that’s specifically for the romance community? I wanted to create a safe, supportive, fun environment that was a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE! All fitness levels are welcome.
