Week #3 Semi-Finalist: Rachel at Proud Air Force Wife!

My husband is Active Duty Air Force. He has been in since November 2006. We’re currently stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Our story isn’t a real tear-jerker or anything fancy, but it’s ours and that’s what matters. We met through mutual friends shortly after Shawn had come home from his second deployment, which was to Iraq. I remember meeting him and instantly felt like we had known each other for years. We clicked instantly! We had been dating for almost a year and found out that he would be deployed again. I was scared to death! I didn’t know what to expect or how to even handle a deployment. I was terrified!

Before leaving for training to deploy he took me back to this little park, where we had gone shortly after we started dating. He asked me if I’d wait for him and naturally, I said I of course I would. Little did I know that he would ask me to marry him that day! We went through deployment just like any couple does. Missing important events, milestones, had our okay days and our incredibly hard days. I’m sure most people can relate to those days where you don’t even want to get out of bed when your loved one is gone, right? So instead of being miserable, I tried to focus on school, work, and of course planning out wedding! As hard as deployments are, you get through them and your love and devotion is stronger because of what you endured, together. I married my soul mate, best friend, and my hero on November 11, 2011 and I couldn’t be happier! The picture is from our wedding, just moments after we said our vows.

I love my soldier! And even though the military life isn’t always a glamorous one, I’m so thankful for the life I live! It’s made me so much more thankful, empathetic, loving, compassionate, and so incredibly humble. I’m so glad that my husband serves to protect me and this country! He does more for this country than most ordinary people would, and for that I’m so proud to be his wife! This is just the beginning of our journey together!

Thank you for listening to our story!
